Samenvatting

Iedereen komt wel in aanraking met voedingshypes. Een strikte definitie van wat een voedingshype is, is er niet. Het kan omschreven worden als: ‘Iets wat, met name dankzij inspanningen van de media, bij een bepaald publiek als mode of sensatie fungeert.’ Een voedingshype is niet per definitie onzin, maar neigt daar in de praktijk wel vaak naar. Vaak is er een kern van ‘waarheid’, maar zijn zaken uit de context gehaald, die daardoor onjuist of ongenuanceerd worden. In dit hoofdstuk wordt besproken wat een voedingshype is, waaraan een voedingshype herkend kan worden en waarom mensen een voedingshype volgen. Dan volgen er enkele voorbeelden, waarvan er één uitgewerkt wordt, namelijk de theorie dat het nodig is om koolhydraten te schrappen om gewicht te verliezen.
