Samenvatting

De ziekte van Alzheimer heeft bij het grootste deel van de patiënten ouder dan 65 jaar waarschijnlijk een multifactoriële etiologie. Dit is, samen met de toediening van medicatie in een laat stadium aan zeer heterogene patiëntenpopulaties, een belangrijke reden waarom medicamenteuze interventies tot nu toe waarschijnlijk niet werkzaam bleken. De hypothese van multicausaliteit biedt echter nieuwe openingen voor preventie en behandeling, onder meer met voedingsinterventies. In dit artikel beschrijven we in hoofdlijnen wat er bekend is van de complexe relatie tussen voedingsmiddelen en dementie, zowel uit epidemiologisch als interventieonderzoek. We geven tot slot enkele adviezen voor de praktische begeleiding van patiënten met (een verhoogd risico op) de ziekte van Alzheimer in de sfeer van voeding, voedingssupplementen en medische voeding, die ook uitvoerbaar zijn in de eerste lijn.
