Voeding en de biologische klok

Abstract

Sinds het begin van de evolutie zijn bijna alle wezens op aarde onderworpen aan het dagelijkse ritme van licht en donker. Als gevolg hiervan ervaren de meeste levende wezens ook een dagelijks ritme in de aanwezigheid van voedsel. In dit artikel beschrijven we de biologische klok, bestaande uit een centrale klok in de nucleus suprachiasmaticus (SCN) en perifere klokken in verschillende weefsels (waaronder de lever, de alvleesklier en de darm).We beschrijven hoe de perifere klokken aangestuurd worden door de centrale klok en door metabole signalen. Vervolgens gaan we in op de invloed van de biologische klok op voedselinname, activiteit van het gastro-intestinale systeem en de stofwisseling van glucose en lipiden. Daarna beschrijven we de gevolgen van de invloed van de biologische klok op de spijsvertering en de stofwisseling, waarbij we ingaan op de gezondheidseffecten van het tijdstip van voedselinname, de maaltijdfrequentie en al dan niet ontbijten. Ook gaan we in op de mogelijke consequenties van de aanwezigheid van de biologische klok voor het toedieningsschema van sondevoeding en parenterale voeding. Ten slotte beschrijven we de relatie tussen de biologische klok en diabetes mellitus type 2.
De afgelopen jaren is er veel ontdekt over de intrigerende verwevenheid van de biologische klok en de stofwisseling, en de komende jaren zal de biologische klok waarschijnlijk een steeds belangrijker rol gaan spelen in de voedingsleer.
