Samenvatting

Verworven kinderafasie (vka) is een niet-aangeboren taalstoornis veroorzaakt door hersenletsel opgelopen op het ogenblik dat het taalvermogen zich – gedeeltelijk – ontwikkeld heeft. De aanwezige taalbeheersing wordt bijgevolg aangetast; er is sprake van verlies of verstoring van reeds bestaande taalfuncties. Deze pathologische conditie stemt overeen met de algemene acceptatie van de term afasie bij volwassenen.

Sinds Zangwill (1960), Basser (1962) en Lenneberg (1967) staat dit proces bekend onder de naam ‘de hypothese van de equipotentialiteit en progressieve lateralisatie’.

De clinicus die een unilaterale motorische uitval (bijvoorbeeld een halfzijdige verlamming) van de linker lichaamshelft vaststelde, kon hieruit een beschadiging van de rechter hersenhemisfeer afleiden. Wanneer het kind bovendien afatisch was, werd dezelfde rechter hemisfeerlaesie tevens verantwoordelijk geacht voor de taalstoornis, terwijl de kans zeer groot was dat de afasie in werkelijkheid veroorzaakt was door een concomitant, niet ontdekt letsel in de linker hemisfeer.
