Verwachtingen van jongeren en ouders over ontwikkelingstaken in de adolescentiefase

In de westerse cultuur wordt de adolescentie gezien als een overgangsperiode tussen de kindertijd en de volwassenheid, waarin jongeren een aantal ontwikkelingstaken tot een goed einde moeten brengen, zoals emotioneel onafhankelijk van ouders worden, een opleiding afmaken, werk vinden en zelfstandig gaan wonen. In de populaire meningsvorming komt de adolescentie nogal eens naar voren als een moeilijke periode. Adolescenten worden vaak afgeschilderd als onrustig en wispelturig. Conflicten in gezinnen met een adolescent zouden meer regel dan uitzondering zijn. Deze opvattingen worden niet alleen gepresenteerd door de media of vanuit de klinische praktijk, maar worden ook door de ouders gedeeld. Ouders van preadolescenten, vooral moeders, verwachten dat hun kinderen moeilijk in de omgang zullen worden, dat adolescenten moeite zullen hebben met het accepteren van lichamelijke veranderingen en dat conflicten zullen toenemen (Buchanan e.a., 1990). De meeste ouders beschouwen deze periode dan ook als de moeilijkste voor opvoeders (Dekovic, Groenendaal & Gerris, 1996). …
