Samenvatting

Veroudering kan gepaard gaan met een achteruitgang in sensorische en motorische functies zoals horen, zien, voelen en bewegen. Door het minder goed verwerken van prikkels van buitenaf wordt de omgeving van de oudere als ‘armer’ ervaren terwijl juist een verrijkte omgeving een zeer positief effect heeft op het functioneren van de hersenen van de oudere. Studies die in dit artikel besproken worden tonen aan dat fysieke activiteit, blootgesteld worden aan extra helder licht, en elektrostimulatie een gunstig effect kunnen hebben op cognitie, waaronder het werkgeheugen en het slaap-waakritme van ouderen. Verder wordt benadrukt dat het effect van senso(motorische) stimulatie op het functioneren van de hersenen vergroot kan worden indien het gecombineerd wordt met een bepaalde vorm van cognitieve training. Toekomstig onderzoek zal zich vooral op de klinische relevantie van een combinatie van interventies moeten richten.
