8. Verklaren van stabiliteit van individuele verschillen en volgorde in ontwikkeling

Samenvatting

Individuele verschillen worden in de loop van de adolescentie meer systematisch, of het nu gaat om persoonlijkheidstrekken, relaties met ouders of psychopathologie. Welke processen zorgen voor deze stabiliteit? Ik beantwoord deze vraag voor depressie, (sociale) angst en agressie. Kortetermijnprocessen, zoals mislukte emotieregulatie en stressgevoeligheid, blijken de stabiliteit goed te kunnen verklaren. Ontwikkelingsvolgordemodellen hebben een duidelijke beperking: ze laten niet de mechanismen achter een ontwikkelingsvolgorde zien. Welke lange- en kortetermijnprocessen brengen een ontwikkelingsvolgorde tot stand? In dit hoofdstuk gaat het over ouder-adolescentrelaties en de identiteit van adolescenten. Geheimhouding door adolescenten blijkt zo het mechanisme te zijn dat verklaart waarom schending van privacy door ouders ertoe leidt dat ze uiteindelijk minder weten over hun kinderen. Wisselende emoties verklaren waarom adolescenten later negatieve relaties met hun ouders krijgen. Onzekerheid over identiteit leidt later tot meer angst en depressie.
