14. Veranderbaarheid van persoonlijkheidsstoornissen

Samenvatting

De persoonlijkheid wordt doorgaans gedefinieerd als het profiel van die eigenschappen van de mens die duurzaam typerend voor hem zijn. Dit zou kunnen betekenen dat de persoonlijkheid inderdaad onveranderlijk is of dat veranderingen niet worden opgemerkt. Onveranderlijkheid is overigens wat anders dan onveranderbaarheid. De nieuwste wetenschappelijke inzichten laten zien dat de persoonlijkheid en persoonlijkheidsstoornissen wel degelijk veranderbaar zijn. Om deze nieuwe inzichten te introduceren, komen eerst enkele misvattingen en misconcepties ten aanzien van de veranderbaarheid van persoonlijkheid en persoonlijkheidspathologie aan de orde. Daarna volgt een overzicht van recente wetenschappelijke bevindingen ten aanzien van de veranderbaarheid van persoonlijkheid en persoonlijkheidspathologie. De bevindingen worden vervolgens theoretisch ingebed. Ten slotte worden enkele praktische implicaties op een rij gezet.
