Veiligheid creëren in Emotionally Focused Therapy: een n = 1-processtudie

Samenvatting

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), of emotiegerichte relatietherapie, is een effectieve behandeling voor stellen met relatieproblemen. EFT helpt niet alleen om relatieproblemen op korte termijn te verminderen, de effecten houden ook op de langere termijn aan. Met de voorliggende studie wilden wij inzicht krijgen in de processen die al in fase één van EFT leiden tot een groeiend gevoel van veiligheid bij de partners, een gebeurtenis die cruciaal is voor het behandelsucces van EFT omdat veiligheid een belangrijke voorwaarde is voor het diepgaande interpersoonlijke en intrapsychische werk dat de therapeut in latere therapiefasen verricht. In de voorliggende studie analyseerden we video-opnames van de eerste zes sessies van een EFT-casus, afkomstig uit een gerandomiseerde gecontroleerde trial naar EFT. Hieruit kunnen we concluderen dat alle verwachte elementen van veiligheid inderdaad al in deze eerste zes therapiesessies tot stand werden gebracht. Verder blijkt uit onze analyses dat de EFT-therapeut proactief was in het benutten van de cruciale therapiemomenten (kansen), waardoor beide partners in deze EFT-casus meer emotionele veiligheid konden ervaren, wat een de-escalerend effect had op de partnerinteractie. In dit artikel staan we stil bij de implicaties van de belangrijkste onderzoeksbevindingen.
