Van ‘een gokje wagen’ tot gokverslaving: de neurocognitieve achtergrond van pathologisch gokken

Abstract

De meeste mensen in Nederland wagen wel eens een gokje, zoals blijkt uit de speelomzet van ruim anderhalf miljard euro bruto in 2004, die het College van Toezicht op de Kansspelen rapporteerde. Bij een klein gedeelte van deze mensen gaat het echter verder dan een gokje wagen en kan gokken leiden tot gokverslaving, waarbij de gokker de controle verliest over zijn eigen gokgedrag en de negatieve consequenties zich opstapelen: schulden, problemen op het werk of in relaties en het niet meer kunnen stoppen met gokken. De verminderde zelfregulatie die een gokverslaafde laat zien, roept de vraag op of er ook verminderde zelfregulatie is op een basaler, neurocognitief niveau. En hebben neurocognitieve functies ook gevolgen voor het verloop van deze stoornis?
