Van ‘een gokje wagen’ tot gokverslaving: de neurocognitieve achtergrond van pathologisch gokken

In 1980 werd pathologisch gokken in het Diagnostisch en Statistisch handboek ’ IV opgenomen en geclassificeerd als een ‘stoornis in de impulsbeheersing, niet elders geclassificeerd’ (American Psychiatric Association, 1994). Bij pathologisch gokken gaat het om ‘aanhoudend en recidiverend onaangepast gokgedrag’, zoals blijkt uit ten minste vijf van tien diagnostische criteria. Voorbeelden van criteria zijn: gepreoccupeerd zijn door gokken; steeds meer geld nodig hebben om te gokken en de gewenste opwinding te bereiken; rusteloos of prikkelbaar zijn wanneer niet gegokt kan worden; weinig succesvolle pogingen doen om het gokken te verminderen of te stoppen; vanwege gokken relaties of werk dreigen kwijt te raken. Naast deze criteria moet het gokgedrag niet beter te verklaren zijn door een manische periode. …
