Samenvatting

Dit hoofdstuk geeft een overzicht van de belangrijkste methodologische valkuilen die een correcte analyse, presentatie en interpretatie van met name etiologisch onderzoek in de weg staan. De begrippen validiteit en betrouwbaarheid worden vergeleken en achtereenvolgens uitgelegd. Bij de bespreking van de betrouwbaarheid wordt stilgestaan bij de steekproefomvang, het betrouwbaarheidsinterval en de relatie tussen type I-fouten, type II-fouten en de ‘power’. Bij de bespreking van de validiteit komen selectiebias, informatiebias en confounding aan de orde. Vervolgens wordt uitgelegd hoe randomisatie, restrictie, matching, stratificatie, standaardisatie, mathematische modelbouw en causale diagrammen kunnen helpen om mogelijke vertekening te bestrijden. Het hoofdstuk sluit af met een uitleg over effectmodificatie, externe validiteit en de toepassing van de begrippen validiteit, betrouwbaarheid en responsiviteit bij meetinstrumenten.
