Samenvatting

Longkanker is een van de meest fatale vormen van kanker in de wereld. Dit wordt veroorzaakt door de hoge incidentie en mortaliteit. Wereldwijd is longkanker het meest voorkomende type van de solide tumoren met meer dan één miljoen nieuwe gevallen per jaar. De incidentie stijgt per jaar met 0,5%. Eind jaren tachtig van de vorige eeuw ontstond er een daling van de incidentie van longkanker bij mannen, maar bij de vrouwen steeg de incidentie sterk van 6 per 100.000 in 1960 tot meer dan 40 per 100.000 in 1990. Zowel bij mannen als bij vrouwen wordt de hoogste incidentie gevonden in Noord-Amerika en Noord-Europa. Ondanks de forse daling van de longkankerincidentie bij Nederlandse mannen in het afgelopen decennium, behoort Nederland nog steeds tot de landen met de hoogste incidentie in West-Europa. Alleen bij mannen in België en Luxemburg is de incidentie hoger. Ook in de meeste Oost-Europese landen komt bij mannen meer longkanker voor dan in Nederland.
