Tryptofaandepletie als experimenteel model voor depressie

Abstract

De neurotransmitter serotonine speelt een belangrijke rol in de oorzaak en medicamenteuze behandeling van depressie. Hoe veranderingen in de serotoninehuishouding kunnen leiden tot veranderingen in symptomen kan experimenteel worden onderzocht door Acute Tryptofaan Depletie (atd). Met deze methode wordt via inname van een aminozuurmengsel kunstmatig een tekort aan tryptofaan en (ten gevolge hiervan) aan serotonine geïnduceerd. In dit artikel worden de effecten van tryptofaandepletie op stemming en cognitieve functies beschreven. Tevens wordt de tryptofaandepletiemethode als model voor biologische gevoeligheid voor depressie geëvalueerd.
