Traumagerelateerde amnesie: een neurobiologisch fenomeen?

Abstract

Binnen de neurowetenschappen staat ‘posttraumatische amnesie’ bekend als een toestand van verwardheid, desoriëntatie en vergeetachtigheid (amnesie), die kan optreden na letsel aan het hoofd (zie Schmand, Neuropraxis 5, 2001). Binnen de klinische psychologie wordt deze term daarentegen gebruikt om een meer omstreden fenomeen aan te duiden, namelijk geheugenverlies dat zou optreden na ‘psychisch letsel’, oftewel een psychologisch traumatische gebeurtenis, zoals ernstig fysiek of seksueel misbruik (zie Elzinga, 2002). Herhaaldelijk is gerapporteerd dat een aanzienlijk deel van de personen die een psychologisch traumatische gebeurtenis hebben meegemaakt zich dit op een bepaald moment niet kan herinneren (Scheflin & Brown, 1996). Deze vorm van geheugenverlies betreft met name één of meerdere specifieke (emotionele) gebeurtenissen uit het verleden, terwijl recente gebeurtenissen wel goed worden onthouden en de oriëntatie intact is.
