Transcraniële magnetische stimulatie bij de behandeling van depressie

Samenvatting

De Wereldgezondheid Organisatie (who) schat dat wereldwijd 121 miljoen mensen momenteel een ernstige vorm van depressie hebben. De prevalentie varieert van één tot zes procent en daarmee is depressie één van de meest voorkomende mentale stoornissen in het Westen (Weismann et al., 2001). Een depressieve episode is een mentale toestand die wordt gekenmerkt door hevige neerslachtigheid, somberheid, demotivatie, verlies van energie en zingeving. Om van een depressie te kunnen spreken moet een persoon volgens het Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (apa, 2000) in een aaneengesloten periode van twee weken tenminste vijf van de volgende klachten hebben:
1. terneergeslagen stemming gedurende het grootste deel van de dag;
2. verminderde interesse en plezier in alledaagse bezigheden;
3. concentratieproblemen;
4. terugkerende gedachten aan suïcide;
5. gevoelens van schuld en zinloosheid;
6. slaapproblemen;
7. rusteloosheid;
8. toe/afname in lichaamsgewicht;
9. gebrek aan initiatief.
