Inleiding

Sinds de introductie van het transcraniële ultrageluidsonderzoek voor het non-invasief in beeld brengen van de grote cerebrale arteriën en het hierbij meten van de stroomsnelheden met behulp van Doppler, is het aantal toepassingen van deze techniek nog steeds groeiende (sonotrombolyse, neuromonitoring bij carotisdesobstructie en hartchirurgie, diagnostiek naar open foramen ovale, diagnostiek naar vaatspasmen en hersendood). Transtemporaal, transorbitaal en suboccipitaal via het foramen magnum zijn met behulp van ultrageluid vaten van zowel de voorste als de achterste circulatie in beeld te brengen (figuur 29.1). Het meest gebruikte transtemporale venster is soms ongeschikt, vooral bij vrouwen op hogere leeftijd door toegenomen schedeldikte.
