10. Toepassing van vezelversterkte composieten in de tandheelkunde

Inleiding

In de restauratieve en prothetische tandheelkunde wordt steeds meer gebruikgemaakt van metaalvrije restauraties die adhesief worden geplaatst. Het kunstharscomposiet geldt inmiddels als een universeel toepasbaar restauratiemateriaal en is niet meer weg te denken uit de dagelijkse tandheelkundige praktijk. Vanuit mechanisch perspectief bezien heeft composiet het nadeel dat het, in vergelijking met metaal(legeringen), een lagere buigweerstand heeft. Dat beperkt composiet in toepassing, als de constructie blootstaat aan buigkrachten, zoals bij bruggen en opbouwrestauraties. Een interessante ontwikkeling is daarom de toevoeging van lange vezels aan het composiet, waardoor de buigsterkte wordt verhoogd. Buiten de tandheelkunde worden deze vezelversterkte kunststoffen al lange tijd op grote schaal toegepast voor zwaarbelaste constructies die tegelijkertijd licht in gewicht moeten zijn. Voorbeelden zijn rompen van boten, auto- en vliegtuigonderdelen, maar ook alledaagse zaken zoals hockeysticks en stoelen. De toepassing van vezelversterkt composiet spitst zich binnen de tandheelkunde vooralsnog toe op wortelstiften. Minder algemeen is de toepassing van vezelversterking in kunsthars brugconstructies en gebitsprothesen.
