Therapeutisch psychologisch onderzoek bij mensen met persoonlijkheidsstoornissen: uitdagingen en kansen

Samenvatting

Over diagnostiek wordt vaak gezegd dat het een overbodige luxe is. Een uitzondering hierop is therapeutisch psychologisch onderzoek. Hierover wordt gezegd dat diagnostici die zich niet scholen in deze methode een belangrijke kans missen om positieve veranderingen bij cliënten te stimuleren en het therapeutische proces naar een hoger niveau te tillen. Therapeutisch psychologisch onderzoek verwijst naar een collaboratieve, semigestructureerde wijze van geïndividualiseerde klinische psychodiagnostiek. De Viersprong, landelijk centrum voor persoonlijkheidsproblematiek, heeft deze methode van diagnostiek geïmplementeerd. Een deel van het diagnostiekteam werd getraind in het Therapeutisch Psychologisch Onderzoek door Stephen Finn. Daarnaast werd in 2009 gestart met een randomised clinical trial naar het effect van therapeutisch psychologisch onderzoek bij mensen met ernstige persoonlijkheidsstoornissen. Het is nog te vroeg om concrete onderzoeksresultaten te rapporteren maar de aanvankelijke scepsis is ondertussen verdwenen. De twijfel dat mensen met ernstige persoonlijkheidsstoornissen omwille van hun beperktere psychologiserende vermogens niet gebaat zijn bij deze interventie lijkt ongegrond. Het investeren in de samenwerkingsrelatie is enerzijds de uitdaging en tegelijk hefboom bij cliënten met ernstige persoonlijkheidspathologie.
