9. Theorie en praktijk van de geriatrische revalidatie

Abstract

Het normale verouderingsproces hoeft niet noodzakelijkerwijs gepaard te gaan met invaliditeit. Wel is het zo dat vrijwel alle aandoeningen die beperkingen in het functioneren veroorzaken vaker voorkomen onder de oudere populatie. Als gevolg hiervan zullen ouderen sneller te maken krijgen met een beoordelingsprocedure om te zien of ze voor revalidatie in aanmerking komen. Het is onjuist geriatrie en revalidatie van elkaar af te grenzen. Een functionele beoordeling van de noodzaak tot revalidatie zou een integraal onderdeel moeten zijn van het routineonderzoek van alle hulpverleners in de gezondheidszorg die werken met ouderen. Het doel van de geriatrie is het begeleiden van de oudere tot optimaal functioneren. Op grond hiervan kan men stellen dat revalidatie de grondslag is van geriatrische zorg. Het doel van dit hoofdstuk is het beschrijven van de theorie en praktijk van de revalidatie bij ouderen, om zo hulpverleners te helpen zorg van hoge kwaliteit te verlenen.
