Terug naar de basis: een andere focus bij neuro-psycho-biologisch onderzoek

Samenvatting

Bij het onderzoek naar de neurobiologische achtergronden van psychiatrische stoornissen wordt veel aandacht besteed aan de complexe interacties binnen netwerken van de hersenschors en tussen de hersenschors en daaronder gelegen gebieden. Het is de vraag of dit de meest directe weg naar het beste inzicht is. Tijdens de evolutie van de gewervelde dieren is de hersenschors relatief laat ontstaan. Primaire emotionele gedragingen worden geregeld door hersenstructuren die al bij vroege voorouders aanwezig waren. Wel is de hersenschors wellicht essentieel voor de aan deze gedragingen gekoppelde bewuste belevingen en zo aan de inhoud van het bewustzijn en het denken. Zeer belangrijk voor de ontwikkeling van deze inhoud is het vermogen om via geschreven teksten te communiceren. In die communicatie krijgen denkinhouden een eigen bestaan, buiten het individueel biologisch daaraan gekoppelde gedrag. Daardoor is binnen de denkwereld van de mens een virtuele werkelijkheid ontstaan. Deze virtuele denkwereld treedt wel in interactie met die delen van de voorhersenen die emotionele processen reguleren, maar is inhoudelijk grotendeels daarvan onafhankelijk. Hierdoor wordt het gedrag van de individuele mens niet geheel bepaald door biopsychosociale processen en zijn psychische stoornissen ook niet dekkend te beschrijven binnen het biopsychosociale ziektemodel.
