In Developing Talents: Careers for Individuals with Asperger Syndrome and High-Functioning Autism, Temple Grandin and Kate Duffy have written a straightforward, practical, and powerful guide to entering the workforce for individuals with Asperger Syndrome and High-Functioning Autism (hereafter abbreviated as AS/HFA). This is an updated version of the book, which was originally published in 2004. The main problem with this book is that the title does not do it justice, but then it would be difficult to come up with one that does. First, it covers much more than career selection. Second, the advice will be useful for many students with learning disabilities and ADHD as well. Finally, this is a book for parents and clinicians to read much earlier in the life of their child or student than young adulthood. The book makes many important points, but perhaps the most critical is that preparation for a successful career begins in childhood, and takes an enormous amount of energy, work, and persistence on the part of the individual with AS/HFA and their parents and teachers. …
