The two interviews in this issue show the breadth of the domain of Work and Health. The core issue is the development and stimulation of people. While Willem van Rhenen, professor at the Nyenrode Business University and manager of the occupational health and safety service ArboNed, argues in favour of the development of sources of energy, Han Anema, professor at the VU University Amsterdam, takes a standpoint as a physician amongst physicians when he looks at reintegration by multi-disciplinary cooperation in the curative sector. He perceives little difference between occupational physicians and insurance physicians. Stimulating participation is part of medical treatment. This treatment should be remunerated by the regular health insurance and could be coordinated by a health centre or clinic. Willem van Rhenen would like to see occupational physicians – in their role as advisor to employers and employees – enter into discussion with organisations on how the worker will get more energy from work: which would mean genuine prevention. Organisations will have to focus more on people-centred management styles and they will have to look beyond profit maximization. Stressing the human factor in our economy is also the theme of the editorial by Dick van Putten. …
