17. Tandheelkunde in de paleoantropologie

Abstract

De geschiedenis van de paleoantropologie begon in 1829. Toen ontdekte Philippe-Charles Schmerling, geneesheer in het Nederlandse leger en daarna burgerlijk arts in Luik, in Engis een kinderschedel (zie afb. 17.1). Pas een eeuw later toonde Charles Fraipont (1936) aan dat die van een neanderthaler was. Het debat over de evolutie van de mens begon echter pas echt in 1856, bij de ontdekking van de fossielen van het Neanderthal. Tien jaar later vond geoloog Édouard Dupont (1866) in La Naulette tussen resten van uitgestorven dieren een fossiel kaakbeen (zie afb. 17.2). Dit kaakbeen wordt als het eerste anatomische bewijs voor de evolutie van de mens beschouwd.
