Stress en geheugen: de rol van noradrenaline en de amygdala bij emotionele informatieverwerking

Abstract

Welke hersenstructuren spelen een rol bij het waarnemen, het opslaan, het onthouden en weer terughalen van emotionele informatie? En wat is verantwoordelijk voor het ontstaan of optreden van psychopathologie? Ook al is de amygdala betrokken bij vrijwel alle aspecten van emotionele informatieverwerking, de rol die de amygdala speelt bij angststoornissen of depressies en andere pathologie is vooralsnog niet helemaal duidelijk. In de eerste neuro-imaging-studie naar het effect van cognitieve gedragstherapie (cgt) op hersenactivatie bij patiënten met een spinfobie werd voorafgaand aan behandeling significant meer hersenactiviteit in de prefrontale cortex (die gerelateerd is aan controle en inhibitie) en de parahippocampale gyrus gevonden. Patiënten verschilden na cgt niet meer significant van de controlegroep (Paquette, Levesque et al., 2003). De materie is complex: ook al speelt de amygdala een veelvuldig aangetoonde en belangrijke rol bij angstconditionering, bij een reeds verworven fobie lijkt amygdala-activiteit niet essentieel te zijn.
