Stress, angst en depressie: hersenziekte of evolutionaire aanpassing?

Genen kunnen bijdragen aan een hogere overlevingskans van de soort, doordat ze kunnen zorgen voor een omgevingsafhankelijke aanpassing waardoor deze specifieke genen vaker voorkomen in de volgende generatie nakomelingen. Charles Darwin (1859) noemde dit evolutionaire proces ‘natuurlijke selectie’. Het gevolg van natuurlijke selectie is dat het voortplantingssucces van het aangepaste individu wordt gemaximaliseerd, soms zelfs ten koste van het individuele geluk, de individuele gezondheid of de levensduur! Er ontstaat steeds meer bewijs dat individuele verschillen in stressreacties het gevolg zijn van natuurlijke selectie. In het eerste gedeelte van dit artikel zal ik de nadruk leggen op hoe individuele verschillen in stressreacties zijn te verklaren en hoe stress kan zorgen voor aanpassingen. In het tweede gedeelte zal ik proberen aan te geven hoe stressgeïnduceerde aanpassingen kunnen overgaan in pathologie, in het bijzonder angststoornissen en depressie. …
