Stress, angst en depressie: hersenziekte of evolutionaire aanpassing?

Abstract

Volgens Van Dale is ziek zijn: ‘zich bevindend in een toestand dat de levensprocessen niet regelmatig en ongestoord verlopen’. Ziek zijn heeft vaak een negatieve klank. De laatste jaren is echter duidelijk geworden dat ziek zijn in veel gevallen een aanpassing is. Door een infectie kan de lichaamstemperatuur bijvoorbeeld fors stijgen. Een dergelijke temperatuurstijging of koorts is een nuttige reactie van het lichaam, omdat het afweersysteem vervolgens beter gaat werken. Bovendien gedijen ziekteverwekkers slecht bij hoge temperaturen. Kunnen sommige psychiatrische aandoeningen ook gezien worden als aanpassingen (Nesse, 2000) of als resultaat van aanpassingen? Dit is geen makkelijke vraag. In de evolutionaire psychiatrie probeert men een antwoord hierop te formuleren met als uitgangspunt dat hersenprocessen voor een deel verankerd zijn in onze genen.
