15. Stoppen met roken

Samenvatting

Roken is een verslaving die – nog steeds – veel voorkomt bij zowel vrouwen als mannen. De gezondheidsrisico’s voor vrouwen zijn groot. Zo zijn zij gevoeliger voor longkanker en hart- en vaatziekten door roken, en is er kans op zwangerschapscomplicaties. Rokende vrouwen komen vaker op het spreekuur bij de huisarts, zoals voor anticonceptie, kinderwens, cervixuitstrijkjes en menopauzale klachten. Dit creëert mogelijkheden om het rookgedrag bespreekbaar te maken, en in goed overleg door te verwijzen naar intensieve begeleiding met of zonder medicamenteuze ondersteuning. Speciale aandacht is er voor zwangere vrouwen bij wie er een hoge urgentie bestaat voor stoppen. Bij hen kan gebruik worden gemaakt van nicotinevervangende middelen ter ondersteuning en van speciaal getrainde ‘stoppen met roken’-coaches voor deze doelgroep. Huisartsen hebben een belangrijke rol in het signaleren van een rookverslaving en het doorgeleiden naar passende begeleiding. Kennis over genderspecifieke aspecten van het roken helpt om deze rol goed te kunnen vervullen.
