12. Stoornissen in de aandacht en impulsregulatie

Zelfregulatie als een van de onderliggende processen?

Overbeweeglijkheid, concentratieproblemen en impulsiviteit komen veel voor bij kinderen en zijn tot op zekere hoogte uitingen van een normale ontwikkeling. Zijn deze gedragingen hardnekkig, niet leeftijdsadequaat, én verstoren ze het dagelijkse leven, dan spreekt men van ADHD, Aandachtstekortstoornis met Hyperactiviteit. Kinderen en jongeren met ADHD hebben een probleem met zelfregulatie; ze kunnen moeilijk stoppen wanneer dat nodig is, kunnen moeilijk weerstand bieden tegen afleiding terwijl ze met iets bezig zijn, en kunnen hun gedachten en gevoelens moeilijk reguleren. Hét ADHD-kind bestaat niet. Er zijn kinderen die vooral thuis of op school ADHD-gedrag vertonen en kinderen die overal druk en impulsief zijn. Hierdoor vraagt men zich af of er bij al deze kinderen wel gesproken kan worden van één algemeen tekort in de zelfregulatie en of ADHD niet beter opgevat moet worden als gedrag dat samenhangt met verschillende onderliggende verstoorde processen.
