4. Stoornis in de lichaamsbeleving

Samenvatting

De meeste mensen zijn zich doorgaans bewust van hun uiterlijk en voelen zich daar af en toe onzeker of ontevreden over. Ook fantaseren velen over veranderingen aan hun uiterlijk die zij zouden wensen, bijvoorbeeld een minder ronde buik, steviger borsten, een mooiere neus. In de media worden die onzekerheid en ontevredenheid nog eens extra gevoed door het benadrukken van het belang van lichamelijke schoonheid. Wanneer de ontevredenheid of onzekerheid uitmonden in een aanhoudende, tijdrovende en belastende preoccupatie met het uiterlijk, spreken we van Body Dysmorphic Disorder (bdd; American Psychiatric Association (APA), 1994). In het Nederlands wordt deze dsm-iv-diagnose globaal vertaald als ‘verstoorde lichaamsbeleving’. Omwille van de leesbaarheid wordt in dit hoofdstuk de afkorting bdd gebruikt.
