15 Stemmingsproblemen en depressie

Samenvatting

Lange tijd is gedacht dat kinderen niet vatbaar waren voor het ontwikkelen van depressies. Ondertussen is deze gedachte compleet verlaten. Uit het onderzoek dat de laatste dertig jaar is uitgevoerd aan het Institute of Psychiatry in London kan worden afgeleid dat er bij kinderen wel degelijk gevoelens van ellende kunnen voorkomen en dat deze gevoelens een goede, zij het aspecifieke, indicatie vormen voor psychische stoornissen (Harrington, Rutter & Fombonne, 1996). Niet elke negatieve stemming zal tot een depressie leiden. Het is duidelijk dat sommige afwijkingen in negatief affect nog bij een normale ontwikkeling kunnen behoren. Verder ontwikkelingspsychopathologisch onderzoek zal hierin duidelijkheid moeten brengen.
