Samenvatting

Elk kind en elke volwassene kent het fenomeen van een steek in de zij die optreedt tijdens lichamelijke inspanning. Het is een voorbijgaande acute, plaatselijke scherpe pijn. Het komt het meest voor bij hardlopen en zwemmen, maar kan ook voorkomen bij balsporten, paardrijden en fietsen. De steek in de zij wordt meestal beschreven als een scherpe of stekende pijn en, wanneer de pijn wat afneemt, als een krampende zeurende, soms ook trekkende pijn. In dit hoofdstuk beperken wij ons tot de steken in de zij, gerelateerd aan inspanning.
