Samenvatting

Kauwen en slikken doen we dagelijks vele malen in een vloeiend proces, maar zonder ons van die fysiologie bewust te zijn, want we eten en drinken vooral om er plezier aan te beleven. De mondholte, de orofarynx, de hypofarynx en de larynx zijn het bovenste deel van de ademweg, en als stemgenerator en aanzetstuk ons instrument tot verbale communicatie. Tegelijk vormen deze structuren het bovenste deel van de voedselweg. Omdat de oesofagus zich achter de trachea bevindt, kruist de voedselweg tijdens het slikken de ademweg. Dat vraagt snel en veilig transport van het voedsel van de mond naar de oesofagus, waarbij de ademweg kort wordt afgesloten. Tegelijk ademen en slikken is daarom bij mensen (in tegenstelling tot verschillende dieren) uitgesloten (Laitman & Reidenberg, 1993). Als de coördinatie van dit proces tekortschiet, is onder andere verslikken – dat wil zeggen inademen van voedsel – het gevolg.
