20. Slaapproblemen bij kinderen en jeugdigen

Samenvatting

Slapen is essentieel voor iedereen, maar al helemaal voor kinderen. Want juist in de slaap vinden belangrijke processen plaats voor zowel groei als ontwikkeling. In dit hoofdstuk wordt de normale ontwikkeling van de slaap bij kinderen beschreven en welke verstoringen daarin kunnen optreden. Slapeloosheid komt veel voor op de kinderleeftijd, zowel bij gezonde kinderen als bij kinderen met een psychiatrische aandoening. De onderliggende oorzaken zijn divers, en kunnen te maken hebben met gedragsaspecten, slaaphygiëne, prikkelverwerking, een verstoring in de circadiane ritmiek, een psychiatrische stoornis of een combinatie van factoren. De behandeling dient te worden aangepast aan de onderliggende oorzaak en bestaat meestal uit een niet-farmacologische aanpak, incidenteel ondersteund met medicatie. Ook het herkennen van andere slaapstoornissen, zoals het obstructief slaapapneusyndroom, en de relatie met psychiatrische symptomatologie zullen worden besproken.
