Samenvatting

Gedurende jaren was er weinig of geen belangstelling voor de slaap, noch vanuit de geneeskunde, noch vanuit de psychologie. Merkwaardig, want iemand die 60 jaar is heeft daarvan zo’n 20 jaar geslapen. Tot de leeftijd van drie jaar ongeveer heeft een kind meer tijd in slaap- dan in waaktoestand doorgebracht. Indien dit fenomeen, dat we bij vrijwel alle organismen kunnen observeren, geen belangrijke vitale zou functie hebben, zou dat een opmerkelijke vergissing in de evolutie zijn (McNamara,
