Samenvatting

Veel cliënten met een eetstoornis komen niet of pas laat in behandeling. Dit kan aan de cliënte liggen of aan het zorgsysteem. Cliëntvariabelen zijn onder andere schaamte, gebrek aan ziektebesef of motivatie en ambivalentie ten aanzien van een behandeling. Tot de zorgsysteemvariabelen behoren het missen van de diagnose, onderschatting van de ernst van de klachten of lange wachttijden. Vroegherkenning en snelle start van behandeling zijn echter essentieel, omdat het de behandelprognose verbetert. Om vroegtijdige drop-out te vermijden is het van belang om een goede therapeutische relatie met de cliënte op te bouwen. Dit kan door onder andere ‘shared decision’ en een respectvolle benadering van de cliënte. Het opstellen van een casusconceptualisatie helpt de cliënte inzicht te krijgen in haar problematiek en kan haar motiveren voor behandeling.
