Discussing depressive symptoms
Despite the extent of people suffering from depression many do not receive treatment and the reach of preventative activities is limited. Although professionals and volunteers have an increasing role in identifying persons with depressive symptoms and leading them to appropriate care, it is rarely done. Our study among lower educated professionals and volunteers shows that resistance in the client and the presumption that it will cause harm to the trust clients have in their caregiver are indicated as the main barriers to discuss depressive symptoms. Other important barriers, for volunteers in particular, include lack of knowledge, skills and a proper support system.
