Samenvatting

De eigen aard van de seksuologie, haar basisparadigma’s en kernvariabelen, alsook de historische achtergrond van deze nieuwe editie van het Leerboek Seksuologie worden beschreven in dit eerste hoofdstuk als een achtergrond voor de andere 26 hoofdstukken van dit boek. Die basisparadigma’s zijn het essentialisme, het sociaal-constructionisme en het biopsychosociale perspectief. Er wordt geargumenteerd dat het biopsychosociale paradigma – ondanks de ermee verbonden risico’s – de voorkeur verdient om zowel de positieve aspecten van seksualiteit als de ermee geassocieerde risico’s en gevaren wetenschappelijk te bestuderen. Samenhangend daarmee wordt gepleit voor een methodische pluriformiteit. Startend bij de publicatie van Seksuologie voor de arts in 1987 worden de achtergronden en doelen van deze nieuwe editie van het Leerboek Seksuologie toegelicht. In het algemeen beoogt deze editie van het Leerboek Seksuologie een academische inleiding te zijn tot de multidisciplinaire seksuologie, waarbij de actuele stand van zaken overzichtelijk wordt weergegeven en kritisch wordt benaderd.
