24. Seksualiteit en medische aandoeningen

Samenvatting

In dit hoofdstuk staat het verband tussen (chronische) ziekte of handicap én seksualiteit centraal. Eerst wordt een hypothetisch generiek conceptueel model beschreven waardoor de impact van een specifieke medische aandoening op seksualiteit kan worden begrepen. Met een beter inzicht in hoe een ziekte of handicap en seksueel functioneren en/of seksualiteitsbeleving samenhangen, kunnen onderzoekers die samenhang verder ontrafelen. Voor clinici kan het model helpen om het verband tussen ziekte en seksualiteit beter te begrijpen en een passend behandelplan te formuleren. Vervolgens is er aandacht voor een aantal belangrijke principes bij de diagnostiek en behandeling van seksgerelateerde problemen van mensen met een ziekte of handicap. Daarbij wordt ook stilgestaan bij de vragen welke hulpverlener wat het beste kan doen en wat er aan instellingsbeleid nodig is om dat te kunnen garanderen. In een korte slotbeschouwing wordt onder meer een aantal aanbevelingen gedaan voor vervolgonderzoek.
