Repetitieve transcraniële magnetische stimulatie en beeldvormende technieken: het geprikkelde brein in beeld

Abstract

Met repetitieve transcraniële magnetische stimulatie (rtms) kunnen hersengebieden niet-invasief en pijnloos geremd of gestimuleerd worden. Het onderzoek met rtms richt zich zowel op de werking van het gezonde brein als op de mogelijkheid patiënten met neurologische of psychiatrische aandoeningen te behandelen. Een combinatie van rtms met beeldvormende technieken, zoals functionele magnetische resonantie imaging (fmri), maakt het mogelijk de functie van hersengebieden betrouwbaar te onderzoeken. Bovendien kunnen op deze wijze verbindingen met andere delen van het brein ontrafeld worden. Door rtms met andere beeldvormende technieken te combineren kan een uniek ‘vierdimensionaal’ beeld van het brein verkregen worden: dynamische hersenactiviteit in ruimte en tijd.
