18. Relaxatietherapie in de GGZ

Overzicht van diagnostische en kinesitherapeutische technieken

Samenvatting

In zowel de somatische als de geestelijke gezondheidszorg wordt relaxatietherapie steeds meer gepromoot als een veilige, doeltreffende en kosteneffectieve behandeling, hetzij primair hetzij secundair, voor allerlei lichamelijke en psychische klachten. De klinische waarde van relaxatietherapie als onderdeel van de biopsychosociale benadering van psychiatrische stoornissen is inmiddels bekend. Methoden zoals progressieve relaxatie, yoga, mindfulness, autogene training en ademhalingstechnieken krijgen door het groeiend aantal RCT’s en meta-analyses een evidence-based karakter voor de toepassing bij personen met een psychische aandoening. Zowel fysieke, cognitieve, sociaal-affectieve als gedragsmatige problemen kunnen een indicatie zijn voor het starten met relaxatietherapie. Stress, spanningen, angsten, heftige emoties, depressie en ander psychisch lijden uiten zich vaak via het lichaam: vermoeidheid, slapeloosheid, piekeren, hoofdpijn etc. De kinesitherapeut, bij wie het lichaam het aangrijpingspunt van de behandeling is, speelt een belangrijke rol in de preventie en reductie van deze stress- en spanningsgerelateerde klachten. Het doel van deze bijdrage is dan ook om kinesi- en fysiotherapeuten een aantal op wetenschappelijk evidentie gebaseerde handvatten aan te reiken voor de behandeling van spanningsklachten bij personen met psychische gezondheidsproblemen (angststoornissen, depressieve stoornissen, afhankelijkheidsstoornissen, eetstoornissen en psychotische stoornissen).
