Samenvatting

In de verloskunde wordt in het dagelijks taalgebruik de term ‘asfyxie’ gebruikt om aan te geven dat de foetale conditie bedreigd wordt, dan wel verslechtert. Dit komt doordat de foetale zuurstofvoorziening een zodanig (laag) niveau bereikt dat nadere diagnostiek en/of interventie gewenst of geïndiceerd is. Omdat de letterlijke betekenis van het woord asfyxie ‘polsloos’ is, zorgt deze term voor verwarring.
