Definitions

Bipolar disorder is also known as “manic-depressive illness” is defined by the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) 5 (A.P.A. 2013) as a brain illness, characterized by periods of elevated mood and periods of depression. The elevated mood is significant; it impairs daily functioning and is known as mania or hypomania, depending on the severity of the episode or presence of psychosis. During a manic episode, the individual feels and/or acts abnormally and persistently elated, energetic, goal oriented, or irritable and might make poorly thought out decisions with little regard to the consequences.
