4. Psychosociale aspecten van het ouder worden

Abstract

Het menselijke verouderingsproces in al zijn aspecten is niet eendimensionaal. Naast de vanzelfsprekende fysieke elementen heeft het verouderingsproces psychologische, emotionele en spirituele elementen. Dit hoofdstuk gaat over deze psychosociale aspecten. Hoewel een goede lichamelijke gezondheid zeer belangrijk is, geeft zowel wetenschappelijk onderzoek als de levenservaring van eenieder aan dat de cognitieve verwerking van gebeurtenissen invloed heeft op het welbevinden en de gezondheid.1,2 Een onderzoek naar de nasleep van heupfracturen bij ouderen liet zien dat de belangrijkste factor voor een succesvolle revalidatie de aanwezigheid of afwezigheid van depressie was.1 Alleen al dit onderzoek heeft grote implicaties voor de fysiotherapeut, omdat het aantoont dat fysieke inspanningen slechts een minimaal effect zullen hebben tenzij rekening gehouden wordt met de emotionele en mentale toestand van de oudere.
