Psychologische implicaties van type-2-diabetes mellitus

Samenvatting

De dagelijkse zelfzorg van de patiënt met diabetes mellitus is de hoeksteen van de behandeling. Deze stelt echter hoge eisen aan de motivatie en het aanpassingsvermogen van de patiënt. Na de diagnose, rond de overgang naar behandeling met insuline en bij het ontstaan van complicaties kunnen zich aanpassingsproblemen voordoen. Andere psychische problemen die veel voorkomen bij mensen met diabetes zijn: depressie, angst, eetstoornissen en seksuele problemen. Deze gaan vaak gepaard met een slechtere diabetesregulatie.
In de diabetesbegeleiding maakt het geven van voorlichting steeds meer plaats voor het streven naar zelfmanagement en empowerment. Gestructureerde educatieprogramma’s kunnen de zelfzorg en daarmee de instelling van de bloedglucosewaarde verbeteren evenals psychologische behandeling.
Er zijn richtlijnen voor psychologische diagnostiek en behandeling bij diabetes. Er wordt gepleit voor het systematisch monitoren van het welbevinden van patiënten bij periodieke diabetescontroles.
