Abstract

Complementary to part 1, this review summarizes indications, opportunities and applications of ultrasounds in palliative care medicine. In particular, the following topics are discussed:

  • Ultrasound as a non-invasive, low-threshold, bedside technique, which uniquely combines diagnostic efficacy and empathy.

  • Sonographic surveillance of patients with malignant disease.

  • Point-of-care application of ultrasound in palliative care services.

  • Ultrasound-guided palliative interventions (drainage of effusions and other therapeutic procedures).
