Abstract

Meer dan 250 jaar geleden werd voor het eerst scrapie beschreven: een fatale ziekte bij schapen die haar naam dankt aan het schrapen en schuren tegen hekken en bomen vanwege enorme jeuk. Naast jeuk gaat de ziekte gepaard met prikkelbaarheid en ataxie en leidt uiteindelijk tot de dood. Scrapie diende als prototype voor wat wij nu kennen als prionziekten.
