Samenvatting

In 2020 is het rapport van het Integraal Kankercentrum Nederland verschenen met als titel Primaire Tumor Onbekend (PTO). In dit rapport staat de huidige situatie in Nederland rond deze vorm van kanker centraal. De diagnose PTO wordt door verbeterde diagnostiek steeds minder vaak gesteld, maar toch nog ongeveer 1300 mensen per jaar krijgen deze diagnose. Multidisciplinaire samenwerking is essentieel bij het proberen te vinden van de primaire tumor. Het onbekende karakter van de tumor en de slechte prognose geeft veel onzekerheid en angst bij patiënten en vraagt een efficiënt diagnostisch proces. De oncologieverpleegkundige speelt hierbij een belangrijke rol. Een zogenoemd ‘behandelalgoritme’ kan ondersteuning bieden bij de keuze voor therapie.
