13. Polyneuropathie

Polyneuropathie is een veelvoorkomende, multifactoriële en progressieve aandoening van de perifere zenuwen bij ouderen.
De zenuwen zijn vaak symmetrisch en meer distaal dan proximaal aangedaan en kunnen zowel sensibele als motorische afwijkingen geven.
Bij ouderen zijn de meest voorkomende oorzaken van polyneuropathie langdurig alcoholgebruik, diabetes mellitus, medicatie en vitaminedeficiënties.
Onderzoek en behandeling van de oorzaak zijn belangrijk om progressie van de ziekte te voorkomen.
Pijnlijke polyneuropathieën worden symptomatisch behandeld, maar de behandelingen zijn matig succesvol en geven bij ouderen vaak risico’s op bijwerkingen.
