18. Pleidooi voor een combinatie van krachttraining en leefstijlprogramma’s voor het behoud van zelfredzaamheid van sedentaire ouderen

Inleiding

Het op peil houden van de zelfredzaamheid is van groot belang voor ouderen. Fitheidseigenschappen, zoals kracht en uithoudingsvermogen, hebben een grote invloed op de zelfredzaamheid van ouderen (Den Ouden, Schuurmans, Arts & Van der Schouw, 2011). Onder andere de knijpkracht en het uithoudingsvermogen blijken belangrijke voorspellers te zijn van beperkingen in het dagelijkse leven (Van Heuvelen, Kempen, Brouwer & De Greef, 2000). Met het behoud of zelfs het verbeteren van kracht en uithoudingsvermogen kunnen ouderen basale zelfzorgtaken zoals wassen, eten en aankleden (ADL-taken) én instrumentele taken zoals huishoudelijke activiteiten en deelname aan het sociale leven (IADL-taken) langer zelfstandig uitvoeren.
