Samenvatting

Er zijn verschillende typen pijn te onderscheiden, bijvoorbeeld naar de tijdsduur (acute of chronische pijn) en naar de bron van de pijn (nociceptieve, neuropathische of centrale pijn). Een veelgebruikt pijnmodel is het model van Loeser, dat bestaat uit vier cirkels: nociceptie, pijngewaarwording, pijnbeleving en pijngedrag. Naar schatting wordt ongeveer 45 % van de ouderen tussen 65–75 jaar in Nederland belemmerd door pijn. Pijn is van invloed op verschillende orgaansystemen, zoals het neurologisch, zintuiglijk, motorisch, cardiovasculair en digestief systeem. Pijn kan het gevolg zijn van een bepaalde aandoening, maar ook een oorzaak voor ontregeling van orgaansystemen. Mogelijke preventieve interventies bij pijn zijn informatie en voorlichting geven, pijnmedicatie geven en afleiding zoeken. Een combinatie van farmacologische en niet-farmacologische interventies is de standaardbehandeling bij pijn. Een positieve arts-patiëntrelatie is geassocieerd met verbeterde behandeluitkomsten.
