9. Pijn en palliatieve zorg

Samenvatting

Palliatieve zorg is de actieve, totaalzorg van patiënten bij wie de aandoening niet meer kan genezen en omvat meer dan het begeleiden van de terminale fase. Goede controle van pijn of andere symptomen en van psychische, sociale en spirituele noden is essentieel. De complexiteit van chronische aandoeningen, vaak gepaard met cognitieve veranderingen, bij de ouder wordende populatie leidt tot veranderende symptomatologie en behoeften tijdens de laatste levensfase. Goede palliatieve zorg begint met een optimale beoordeling van symptomen aan de hand van hulpmiddelen, die zijn aangepast aan de cognitieve en communicatieve vaardigheden van de persoon. Een van de belangrijkste symptomen gedurende het gehele palliatieve traject van de oudere is ‘pijn’. Richtlijnen ontwikkeld door panels van deskundigen kunnen behulpzaam zijn bij het optimaliseren van de detectie en behandeling. Het begeleiden van de oudere in de palliatieve fase is een taak voor elke zorgverlener en vereist naast een uitstekende kennis van de geriatrische en palliatieve zorg, ook een dosis empathie en goede communicatieve vaardigheden.
